Brief History of the Club:
Letterkenny Model Flying Club, was first setup back in the mid 80's. Regular flying then was conducted at the 'Big Isle' on the manorcunningham side of Letterkenny. A site which was well known by many as a great flying site and famous for the large flyins that once took place there.
In the earlly '90's the 'Big Isle' site became no longer available, and model flying was then scattered out in private fields around the county, and only since about 2001 did any regular model flying take place again at a microlight airstrip in Carnone near Castlefinn, and also later at a site outside Ramelton.
In 2006 the flyers at Carnone joined forces with model flyers in the Ramelton area and the Letterkenny Model Flying Club was reformed presently with 15 members.
The Club is now centered at Stevensons Airfield, in conjunction with the Letterkenny Full size Flying Club, just outside the town of Letterkenny in Co. Donegal, in the north west of Ireland. see map above
Sundays are the main flying days, but flying can take place any day and most evenings during the summer months.
Types flown range from shocky's (indoor electric models) to turbine jets.
We keep a closely mown square 100 x 30yrds at the strip for model use but we also have use of the full 560yrd grass & Tarmac runways used for the full size. The tarmac strip is narrow but is used mainly for take off especially with models like jets. Having the benifit of the full size strip, gives us good approach's from both ends especially when flying larger or faster models.
The Club is affiliated to the Model Aeronautics Council of Ireland (MACI) who look after model flying regulations in Ireland. This gives each of the club Members, Third Party Insurance Cover, for flying thier models.
